Understanding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Conditionals

First Conditional – Real Future Possibility

Use: To talk about something that might really happen in the future.

Form: If + present simple, will + base verb

Example: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay inside.

Key Clues: Look for future time references (tomorrow, next week, tonight)

Second Conditional – Unreal Present or Future

Use: To talk about imaginary or unlikely situations.

Form: If + past simple, would + base verb

Example: If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world.

Key Clues: Look for hypothetical situations or wishes (right now, every day, one day)

Third Conditional – Imaginary Past (Regret)

Use: To talk about something that didn’t happen in the past and imagine a different result.

Form: If + had + past participle, would have + past participle

Example: If she had left earlier yesterday, she wouldn’t have missed the bus.

Key Clues: Look for past time references (yesterday, last week, in 2020)
